Grizzly Bear

The windows of an old log cabin are cracked open. Cold mountain air drifts into a kitchen filled with honey, warm woods and breakfast cooking on the stove. Your best friend is making it.

Your best friend also happens to be a giant grizzly bear.

That’s where this fragrance eventually took me, although it started with a much simpler thought. I’ve always loved the imagination behind Zoologist, and one day I caught myself wishing they would make a Grizzly Bear fragrance. Then I wondered why I was waiting for someone else.

I began with the environment: cold air, evergreens, woods and smoke. Once the forest was there, my imagination kept going.

What if the bear was someone you felt safe around? What if he was enormous and soft, the kind of friend you could lean against after a long day? Could I make a fragrance feel fluffy?

Honey became part of the picture. Little touches of warmth and softness followed. Gradually, the fragrance began feeling inhabited.

Then I smelled the blotter again and found myself in that cabin. Cool air through the windows. Warmth in the kitchen. A ridiculous friend making breakfast, and somehow the whole scene felt right.

I had reached something I couldn’t have planned at the beginning. Adding more would have meant leaving it behind.

Grizzly Bear was the fragrance that taught me when to stop.
